Finding Care in New York

OB/GYNs That Take MetroPlus Health: Prenatal and Gynecology Care in NYC

To find an OB/GYN that takes MetroPlus Health, search the MetroPlus provider directory for your plan, or start with NYC Health + Hospitals, which owns MetroPlus and runs women's health clinics and labor and delivery units across the city. Either way, call to confirm the provider, the location and that they're taking new patients.

The shortcut most members don't realize they have: because MetroPlus and H+H are the same system, the city's public hospitals are about as in-network as it gets. That doesn't mean you have to use them. It means you always have an option.

What MetroPlus is

MetroPlus Health is a wholly owned subsidiary of NYC Health + Hospitals, the city's public health system. It says it has roughly 700,000 members and a network of more than 34,000 sites across the five boroughs.

Plan types include:

  • Medicaid managed care
  • Essential Plan
  • Child Health Plus
  • Marketplace plans through NY State of Health
  • Plans for New York City employees
  • Medicare and dual-eligible plans

In the State Department of Health's 2024 Managed Care Consumer Guide, MetroPlus reported Medicaid and Essential Plan results only for the New York City region. In plain terms: it's a city plan.

The H+H hospitals that deliver babies

These NYC Health + Hospitals hospitals reported births to the State Department of Health in 2023:

Borough H+H delivery hospital Births (2023) Births attended by a licensed midwife
Manhattan Bellevue 1,533 11%
Manhattan Harlem 704 4%
Manhattan Metropolitan 979 35%
Bronx Jacobi 1,799 57%
Bronx Lincoln 1,479 under 1%
Bronx North Central Bronx 981 64%
Brooklyn Kings County 1,409 4%
Brooklyn Woodhull 1,339 69%
Brooklyn South Brooklyn Health 1,424 20%
Queens Elmhurst 2,621 8%
Queens Queens Hospital Center 1,382 under 1%

Two things jump out. First, if you want a midwife, Woodhull, North Central Bronx and Jacobi are midwife-heavy services. Second, Staten Island has no H+H delivery hospital, so Staten Island MetroPlus members usually deliver at a contracted private hospital. Check with MetroPlus which one.

You don't have to use H+H at all. MetroPlus also contracts with community health centers, private OB/GYN practices and other hospitals.

Finding a MetroPlus OB/GYN: step by step

  1. Look at your card for the plan type: Medicaid, Essential Plan, NYC employee plan or marketplace. Networks can differ between them.
  2. Search MetroPlus's directory for "Obstetrics & Gynecology" or "Midwife" near you.
  3. Cross-check in our directory by borough, like Brooklyn or the Bronx, or by MetroPlus.
  4. Call the office and ask the exact question: "Do you take MetroPlus [plan type] at this location?" Some practices take it at one office and not another.
  5. For an H+H clinic, call the hospital's women's health or OB/GYN clinic directly. They can book midwife visits too.

Pregnancy care with MetroPlus

MetroPlus covers prenatal visits, the tests and ultrasounds your provider orders, delivery and postpartum care. Medicaid and Essential Plan members generally pay no premiums.

How fast you should be seen. If you have MetroPlus Medicaid, New York's 2026 perinatal care standards say you should be offered a first prenatal visit within 3 weeks of asking if you're in the first trimester, 2 weeks in the second trimester and 1 week in the third. If the office offers you something later, call MetroPlus member services (the number on your card) and say you need a prenatal appointment within the state's time frame.

What H+H prenatal care is often like. Clinics at large public hospitals can be busy. Many patients say to bring a snack and a charger and expect some waiting, especially at visits with an ultrasound or lab draw. On the plus side, labs, ultrasound and specialists are often in the same building, so you're not crossing the borough for each test.

Midwives. If you'd like midwifery care, ask when you book. Browse certified nurse midwives to see who's near you.

High-risk pregnancy. Bellevue in Manhattan is a New York State Regional Perinatal Center, the top level in the state's system for complex pregnancies and sick newborns. If you need a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, your provider will refer you.

Language access

NYC Health + Hospitals serves patients in many languages, and New York hospital regulations require free interpreter services. Say which language you prefer when you book, so an interpreter is ready. You can ask for one at every visit, not just the first.

If you're uninsured

You can still get care at NYC Health + Hospitals regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. Staff can help pregnant patients apply for Medicaid, which covers pregnancy for household incomes up to 223% of the federal poverty level, and the city's NYC Care program offers access for residents who can't get insurance. See OB/GYNs that take Medicaid in NYC.

Gynecology with MetroPlus

MetroPlus plans also cover routine and problem-focused gynecology with in-network providers:

  • Well-woman visits, Pap and HPV testing
  • Birth control, including IUDs and implants
  • STI testing and treatment
  • Evaluation of bleeding or pelvic pain

H+H women's health clinics offer many of these, and some have same-week visits for urgent problems. Ask when you call. If you need surgery for fibroids or endometriosis, for example, confirm that both the surgeon and the hospital are in your MetroPlus network.

When to see a doctor

Book a gynecology appointment for heavy or irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, discharge with an odor or itching, a missed period, or bleeding after menopause.

If you're pregnant, go to labor and delivery or an emergency room right away for:

  • Heavy bleeding or severe belly pain
  • A severe headache or vision changes
  • Fluid leaking
  • A fever
  • Fewer baby movements

You never need MetroPlus approval to get emergency care.
