What is a urogynecologist?

A urogynecologist is usually an OB/GYN with extra training in female pelvic floor disorders: urinary and fecal incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapse and some bladder pain conditions.

What is the difference between a urologist and a urogynecologist?

Urologists treat urinary tract problems in all genders and male reproductive problems. Urogynecologists focus specifically on the female pelvic floor and how the bladder, vagina, uterus and bowel work together.

Does treatment for bladder leakage always mean surgery?

No. Many people improve with pelvic floor physical therapy, bladder training, medications, vaginal estrogen or a pessary. Surgery is one option when these are not enough.

Do I need a referral to see a urogynecologist?

It depends on your plan. Many PPO plans let you book directly, while HMO and many Medicaid managed care plans require a referral. More than 80 urogynecologists are listed in this directory.
